HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

INTRODUCTION

St. Guanella Anbagam Special School is a home which was founded by the Congregation of Servants of Charity at Sivagangai in Tamil Nadu at the southern part of India. This is a Home for caring the Mentally Retarded and differently abled people who have been neglected by their dear ones.

The ignorance and avoidance of family members and other innumerable factors forced us to bring up a home for the mentally retarded and disabled people in this locality. For most of the mentally retarded, monetary support is not alone enough; what they need is decent living conditions and quality care. Keeping this in our minds, we have initiated a new mission of searching for the mentally retarded people and caring them in our special school with human love and affection. Our focus is meant to improve the quality of life of special children in the rural areas through our service by providing free quality of education, treatment, counselling, physiotherapy and consultations since the inception of this special school.

St. Guanella Anbagam Special School is situated in Puliyadithamam at Sarukanei in Sivagangai, district of Tamil Nadu, India. The Guanellians arrived to this place called Yesuvanam in the year 2008 and started to work for the differently abled children, the elderly and the widows. It was to our surprise that there are many in number with disabilities in this locality.

So we went around nearly 20 villages and found out the children with disabilities. Therefore we wanted to begin a centre for these children and approached the Province and the diocese for the approval. Having realized the need, we are allowed to venture into this mission. Though we are not able to bring all the children to our centre we are bringing about 50 children every day. These children are from 16 villages in and around our locality. So every day we go around in two vehicles to pick up from their houses and leave them back in the evening.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION

  • Teaching the mentally retarded children in a friendly way.
  • To provide them therapies and training for their better development.
  • Make every effort to keep alive and to increase awareness of human self-esteem for mentally retarded and ill.
  • Giving dignity and respect to the mentally retarded and ill people.
  • Sensitizing the society to understand that the special children are all God’s children.
  • Bring the underprivileged sections of the society to the privileged sections and to provide them the basic needs for the better living.
  • Find out the unknown to our institute. Provide them the possible means of government helps.

    ABOVE 14 YEARS ADULT MENTALLY RETARDED HOME CUM VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE

    Yesuvanam has realised another project for the above 14 years adult mentally retarded home cum vocational training centre. The renovated old Anbagam building offers rooms for the 40 adults MR and space for vocational activities. At present there are 28 adult MR children stay over and carry at the activities. The vocational education plays vital role in the life of special children. It makes every special children a responsible persons and independent life living. Guanella Anbagam adult home is so much privileged in offering the vocational skills. The special children are categorised and given training by the special educators.

People who are living in our surroundings and locality are very much supportive towards our mission. Irrespective of religions, denominations people have affinity towards the growth of our institution. Since our presence had been known for the cause here in Yesuvanam many people come in contact with our Anbagam special school. They come and celebrate their events with our special children meaningfully such as birthdays, feast days, anniversaries. We are really grateful to their generous heart.
